Welcome Home Celebration for Troops Set for Saturday

Public invited to welcome area soldiers returning from Iraq

ELLETSVILLE- After serving for a year in Iraq, soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 150th Field Artillery of the Indiana National Guard will be the guests of honor at a community-wide “Welcome Home Celebration” planned for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 6. The event will be held at Edgewood High School in Elletsville and the public is encouraged to attend. The 150th includes soldiers based in armories located in Bloomington, Crawfordsville, Danville, Greencastle, Lebanon, Rockville and Spencer.

About 150 soldiers from the unit returned to the United States on Christmas Eve. After spending a brief holiday break with their families, they returned to Camp Atterbury to complete deactivation requirements. On Saturday afternoon, the soldiers will complete the deactivation process and then travel by bus to rejoin their families at the “Welcome Home Celebration.”

In addition to the arrival of the returning soldiers, the “Welcome Home Celebration” will include brief welcoming remarks from local, state and federal leaders, music by the Bloomington Brass Band and an appearance by Miss Indiana, Betsy Uschkrat.

The “Welcome Home Celebration” is being hosted by area citizens and is being co-chaired by Indiana University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and Indiana State Representative Peggy Welch.

The public is encouraged to arrive no later than 6:00 p.m. to ensure that everyone is seated prior to the official arrival of the returning soldiers.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Local media are encouraged to cover this event. Prior arrangements are not required. Preliminary music will begin promptly at 6:15 p.m. and the formal ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Media queries and requests for special arrangements should be directed to Chris Crabtree at (812) 345-0217 or Christopher.L.Crabtree@gmail.com.
